Applying paint in concise, angular blotches with a palette knife, Saavedra renders naturalistic images reminiscent of ancient mosaics and modern digital patterns. He creates jewel toned rectangles and polygons and encloses them with ridges of thick paint, creating a structure that is unique in every painting.
His most recent "Beach Series", a group of large paintings of children playing in the waves, was exhibited in April 2005 at the Venezuela Gallery in Manhattan and in May 2005 in the Hudson Valley Arts Association 74th Juried Exhibition, hosted by the Newington Cropsey Foundation Gallery of Art in Hastings. He won a Certificate of Merit Award for Oils for his "Portrait of a Senior Citizen", exhibited in June at the Salmagundi Club in Manhattan. Early this year his work was part of a national survey exhibition of contemporary realism in Mobile, AL.
Saavedra holds a Master of Arts degree from New York University. He attended the Sorbonne in Paris, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School. In New York City he studied with Andy Reiss and Minerva Durham. A native of Venezuela, he lives in Irvington, NY with his wife, two children, and two cats. Saavedra has been exhibiting in Westchester and Manhattan since 1999. For inquiries contact the artist at (914) 591-9420. You can also visit his website www.Saavedra.us |
