After 26 years of painting larger than life artwork (Photo-realistic and otherwise) for the Outdoor Advertising Industry, Carl is applying himself to the creation of Fine Art in Oil paint with an occasional foray into other media.
Carl is currently represented by the Fletcher Gallery in Woodstock NY. He has recently shown in the Gallery of the Venezuelan Consulate in New York City and I've received First Honorable Mention (2d place) at the Woodstock Art Association Gallery show themed "Magic" for the painting "Nocturnal Garden Visitor: Snap Dragon Faerie" on 2/11/06.
" I have lived the greater portion of my life in the picturesque Hudson Valley of New York State, USA. The spirit of the Valley's landscape runs deep within me. With landscape art, I have decided to explore the Valley's visual offerings along lines similar to the "Luminist" tradition that came from Americas first school of painting- "The Hudson River School".
I have similar interests to the old Hudson River School in the "sublime" aspects of nature, along with natures endless effects of light and atmosphere, from subtle to the dramatic. My interests also lie with the spatial aspects of space, substance, form, tonality, texture, and color nuance.
I have spent time studying many of the original paintings from this "School" (The Hudson River Valley School refers to landscape Artists painting from 1825 to 1880). I have specifically studied those paintings in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, as well as those in the Richard Manoogian collection.
The "sublime" or spiritual (non denominational) in nature still quietly waits to be personally discovered, even in today's modern world. In art from the past it can be seen in the grand vistas painted by Edwin Church or Albert Bierstadt. However, the spiritual can also be found in small intimate spaces. Spaces cuddled in nature like those that nurtured me throughout my youth and adult life. My future landscape paintings will explore both vista and grove. My landscapes, and figurative works will be created incorporating portions of a "New Luminist" light exploration, along with aspects of impressionist color, traditional Old Master's techniques and materials, as part and parcel of my representational painting style.
Figurative Figurative Art, symbolism, myth, magical fancy and imagination play an important role in human history. Painting imaginative art opens up a space to express a somewhat wider array of symbolism; inner, outer, past, present and future, unbounded by either absolute convention or physics. Figurative Art often offers the greatest challenges in drawing and painting, as well as an opportunity to express how it feels to be human, and things unique and special about that existence. It is a branch of Fine Art worth creating and worth collecting/supporting. It speaks across generations, decades, indeed it speaks easily across the centuries.
