Young Academists Program

2024-2025

Ages 9 to 13

Instructor: Vicente Saavedra

Children painting

The Young Academists program is an advanced art class for children that are enthusiastic and strongly interested in drawing and painting. In this class students learn how to draw and paint from direct observation and from photographs. They study proportional relationships, light and shadow, shading, cross-hatching and elements of perspective. Concepts such as symmetry, value, texture, space, and composition are emphasized. The students will train their eye to see size relationships and subtle differences of tone, form and edges, while attaining a mastery over materials. The students will also create other projects that reinforce their observational, drawing and painting skills. Instruction will be tailored to individual student levels, needs, and artistic preferences. Materials are included in the fee.

The Independent Projects Program is for ages 10 and up and for intermediate and advanced students who wish to draw or paint their own project from memory, photographs, or still life. The instructor will provide guidance for the successful completion of the project. This class requires consultation with the instructor prior to registration.
